No surprise there, since he’s been doing that for decades on songs like the Bee Gees’ “I’ve Gotta Get a Message to You” from the ‘60s. Reilly, Jenny Lewis & Tim Heidecker taking on the Louvin Brothers’ “The Kneeling Drunkard’s Plea.” Slowed down, the song aches even more than the Louvins’ version, with Swamp Dogg wringing emotion out of every word. On paper, one of the oddest combinations would be the collaboration between Swamp Dogg, John C. While Mac DeMarco does his best, Haruomi Hosono’s “Honey Moon” ends up feeling a tad too close to easy listening music.

His keyboard licks simply can’t match the interlocking guitar lines. Roedelius covering Tinariwen’s “Les Chant des Fauves” ends up being more successful than one might imagine, but it’s not anywhere near as compelling as the original. Some combinations make more sense than others. More successful, yet still too polite, is Iggy Pop and Zig Zags version of “If I’m in Luck I Might Get Picked Up” originally done by a simply venomous Betty Davis.

Still, if only from a historical perspective, it’s no worse than Lydon attempting to sell Country Life butter. On “Low Life,” Mozart Estate lead singer Lawrence Hayward spews similar bile to Johnny Rotten. The territory the collection covers is vast. Many of the instruments get a similar treatment at one point it even sounds like Barnhardt is blowing in a bottle to get some of the sounds. The vocals are all soft-focused, befitting the muted style of Bunyan’s voice. Vashti Bunyan and Devendra Banhart may seem an unlikely combination, yet their take on the Madelynn Von Ritz aka Lynn Castle song, “How Could You Let Me Go” is a quietly burning tale of heartbreak.

His singing melts butter, his screams burn, and with the Menahan Street Band backing him up, these are moments of unadulterated sexual tension, as he admits to loving and losing. Turned into a vintage soul stomp, Bradley shows why he was also just beginning to receive the recognition he so richly deserved before his untimely death. Recorded back in 2012, Charles Bradley and the Menahan Street Band’s version of Sixto Rodriquez’s “I’ll Slip Away” is a far cry from the Tropicalia-tinged folk of the original. These tracks highlight 10 years’ worth of singles released by Light in the Attic, along with a trove of new records released for the past November’s Record Store Day. Light in the Attic & Friends offers new takes on music from the past, shining a light on artists who may not have received the credit they deserved. Sometimes a record is more than merely a record, it’s a tribute to a spirit that refused to be extinguished.
